Rutland Water is Anglian Water's drinking water reservoir in the county of Rutland, England, to the east of the county town, Oakham. It was known as Empingham Reservoir during its construction and until its official opening in 1976.
Rutland Water Cruises is a family-run business that operates boat trips around the lake during daylight hours from April to October each year.
Rutland Belle plies from Whitwell on the North Shore and calls in at Normanton on the South Shore. Visitors can enjoy the scenery from the water, amidst the sailors, anglers and waterbirds, whilst listening to commentary highlighting points of interest.
The vessel holds insurance and complies with marine safety regulations. It is inspected and licenced annually by the Department for Transports Maritime & Coastguard Agency. The boat is operated by a licenced Boatmaster and a Crewman.
Passenger Numbers: the maximum capacity is for 110 persons, with up to 70 places in the covered all-weather saloon areas on the lower deck, the remainder on the outer upper deck.
Drinks/Tea & Coffee: are available from the licensed bar in the aft saloon. Meals are available at venues nearby.
Access: Rutland Water and Rutland Belle have been recognised and acknowledged by the Tourist Board and Rutland Access for efforts made to provide easy access for all.
Rutland Belle at The Harbour, Whitwell, North Shore, has a vehicle drop-off area and a boarding lift for disabled access. The approach has ramps and handrails and a special bridging-plate means there is no gap to breach between quayside and boat. For those unable to manage the three steps down inside the boat, the crew are happy to operate the hydraulic lift, designed to take wheelchairs.
Rutland Water is a large, horseshoe-shaped reservoir set within three thousand acres of beautiful countryside in the east midlands region of England. Anglian Water owns and administers the reservoir, and around its twenty-five mile perimeter there are four leisure areas. Three are on the north shore at Barnsdale, Whitwell and Sykes Lane.
One is on the south shore at Normanton. Each of these areas has parking, refreshment kiosks, picnic areas, attractions and toilets. There are two cafes at Rutland Water The Harbour Café Bar at Whitwell and LOliveto Italiana at Normanton. The nature reserve lies at the western end of Rutland Water at Egleton.
